6 Ideas For Winter Family Days Out

family outdoors in winter

As Winter draws in, you may feel like the season of family trips are over.  But as long as you wrap up well, the fun doesn’t have to stop! Here are some winter family days out you can enjoy in the colder months.

Pick your own pumpkin

It’s almost Halloween so it’s time to pick your pumpkin! Instead of buying one at the supermarket, make it a family trip and head to one of the many farms that offer a ‘pumpkin patch’. Kids will love choosing that ‘special’ pumpkin to take home, and it helps them to learn about where food comes from.

Spooky farm experience

There are many farms and country houses offering a ‘spooky experience’ at this time of year. For added fun, dress up in costume when you visit.  Just be sure that whichever one you pick is right for little ones! Here are a few you can visit:

Pooka Spooka, Causey Farm, Co. Meath

Newbridge House & Farm, Donabate, Co. Dublin

Red Mountain Open Farm, Co. Meath

Winter light show

Dark evenings don’t have to be gloomy when there are spectacular light shows to be enjoyed. Head to Dublin Zoo for their annual Wild Lights experience, or into your local town to see the Christmas illuminations. It’s a joy to see the delight on your little one’s faces as the lights dance in their eyes.

Visit Santa

The excitement of going to see Santa is a special memory for every child. You can visit the man in the red suit at most shopping centres, but for a more memorable day, check out the many Santa experiences that are available around Ireland. You can visit him on a farm, take a magical train, or even visit his workshop and meet the elves!

Christmas market

There’s nothing more inviting than the smell of hot food and Christmas music combined with browsing for the perfect gift. A stroll around a Christmas Market can be a lovely family activity with hot chocolate (or even a mulled wine) to keep the cold out. Wherever you are in Ireland, there’s sure to be one in your nearest town.

Ice Skating

If you have older children, head for one of the many ice rinks that spring up in the winter months. Skating is a great form of exercise and will put colour in everyone’s cheeks. Just be careful not to fall over!

Remember, it’s all about making memories. So, wrap up well, enjoy yourselves and take plenty of photos. They’ll be a treasure to look back on in years to come.
